Mayo Clinic: Can Coffee Help People Lose Weight?

(Mayo Clinic) Oct. 15, 2010 - Mayo Clinic is a not-for-profit medical research organization that provides health-related information to patients and health-related resources like doctor referrals and even educational services. One of the members of their expert panel Katherine Zeratsky, a registered dietitian, commented on the weight loss qualities of caffeine and coffee. She suggested theories about caffeine's weight loss qualities include appetite suppression and calorie burning.

She stated that, "A few studies indicate that drinking coffee or tea with caffeine may slightly boost weight loss or prevent weight gain". She tempered this statement with the acknowledgement that at this time there isn't enough evidence to conclusively confirm this statement but through early studies and observation it seems logical.

Caffeine's fat burning qualities are stimulated by a process called "thermogenesis", which is the process by which "your body generates heat and energy from digesting food". While she does not reference the particular studies, she states that there are many studies out there that confirm these theories.
